RFP regrets Police brutally on students
The Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) strongly condemns the brutal killing of two (2) students at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) on 16 June 2022 by the Lesotho Police Force. It is disheartening to learn that the two students were murdered while protesting for meal allowances which had not paid been paid.
It is utterly shameful and disgraceful that such an incident happened when Africans were observing the Day of an African Child, commemorated on the 16th of June. The history behind this Day is one that we all condemn and wish could never be repeated. Today we are mourning the all too familiar loss of lives due to police brutality and use of force at students’ protest.
Whilst the RFP condemnation is directed at individual perpetrators of this act, it calls upon the Police Commissioner, to forthwith prosecute such persons. It is worth noting that this unfortunate act has happened before, and regrettably it will happen again if Government keeps failing to adequately capacitate police officers through proper training.
It makes no sense to deny the students their stipends in accordance with the signed contractual agreements, only to agree to pay it in full after the killings of the said students. The issue of stipends has been mishandled by Government for many years and it is one that should have been dealt with by now. The children (students) of Lesotho deserve a government that puts their right to education, safety and wellbeing at the forefront.
The RFP therefore places all the blame on the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho, represented by the National Manpower Development Secretariat under the leadership of Hon. Selibe Mochoboroane (MP) as Minister of Development Planning, Minister of Police and Public Safety, Hon. Lepota Sekola (MP) and the Head of His Majesty’s Government Dr. Moeketsi Majoro (MP).
At this juncture, the RFP calls on all parties to join forces for a better Lesotho, the Lesotho where all citizens will live in peace and harmony.
